THE FUTURE OF
DEMOCRACY IS
IN OUR HANDS
AMERICAN sHIELD
Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic at 12 years old without knowing English, pursued the American dream through dedication and service. He enlisted in the U.S. Army to fund his college education, fought in the Iraq war, and later joined the United States Capitol Police, achieving the rank of Sergeant as a soldier and a police officer. His life took a drastic turn on January 6, 2021, when he was severely injured defending the Capitol during an insurrection. The brutal attack ultimately ended his 17-year police career. Despite this, Gonell continues to speak out against the injustices and falsehoods about that day, embodying the principles of truth, justice, and responsibility. His story, detailed in “American Shield" (“Escudo Americano” in Spanish) is a testament to the resilience and integrity of a decorated officer and immigrant, reflecting the highest aspirations of American democracy.

I said "oh wow" out loud so many times while reading this book, well before the J6 sections. Before becoming a police officer, Sgt. Gonell faced numerous significant life challenges that most of us would not be able to move past. Great respect for his perseverance and continuing public service.—-Clare C. (Barnes&nobles.com)
American Shield is an incredibly inspiring book that details the great lengths Sgt. Gonell went to succeed in the United States. And by all accounts he was succeeding as a husband, a father, and as a defender of the U.S. Capitol. What a shame that his career in law enforcement was destroyed January 6, 2021, despite his valiant efforts and heroism on that terrible day. Sgt. Gonell’s book does a beautiful job describing how his life changed so dramatically on January 6, 2021, but also how he and his family fought for a return to physical and mental health. His love for law enforcement, his family, and how hard he fought for his own health and life is very inspirational. I loved this book and highly recommend it!—-Elissa Rumsey (Amazon.com)
